About TrafficZoom

TrafficZoom publishes directional traffic volume data for every road segment in the United States with AADT > 500 vpd: how many vehicles use a road, when they use it, what share of them are heavy vehicles, and drivers' origin demographics.

What is on this site

The question behind every page here - how much traffic actually passes this location - is asked constantly by site selectors, civil engineers, municipal and transportation specialists and real estate professionals.

County pages — free, no account
Average annual traffic volume (AADT), truck share, vehicle-miles traveled, average travel time, congestion ratio and demographics in drivers’ origin, with comparisons against neighboring counties, as well as a rank within the state.
The TrafficZoom platform — paid
Segment-level analytics, custom corridors, hourly and seasonal profiles, and API access. The county pages are the public layer of the same data.

Where the numbers come from

TrafficZoom volumes are engineered estimates, not raw counts. Six inputs go into the pipeline documented on our Methodology page.

01
Mobile device location data — anonymised and aggregated before it reaches us
02
OpenStreetMap road network geometry
03
Hardware detectors, cameras and permanent count stations
04
Virtual detectors, extending coverage where no physical counter exists
05
State DOT count programmes, published publicly by each state
06
U.S. Census Bureau statistics, for area-level driver profiles

How accurate the data is

We validate our estimates against verified measurements performed by traditional counters and state-of-the-art detectors. Across validated locations, the median average percentage error is 11.2%, with a maximum of 20% at a 90% confidence level. We do not publish locations below 300 vehicles per day. Usually, the error is larger on low-volume rural segments and smaller on larger roads, highways and arterials, where the sample is densest.

We publish these numbers because traffic estimates get used for decisions with real money behind them, and a figure without an error bar is not usable. If a number on our site conflicts with a count you have measured, tell us - we’ll verify your measurement and re-run the segment if needed.

Coverage

What is included, and how often it changes.

Every state, every county
All U.S. states and every county-level area, plus the road network inside each one.
Highway and non-highway, separately
Estimated as two distinct road classes, because their volumes, truck share and travel times behave differently.
Trucks from class 5 up
Truck volumes and truck share are reported for class 5 and above, alongside total traffic.
Refreshed quarterly
Estimates are recomputed on a fixed schedule, and every page shows the vintage of the data it displays.

What we do not do

We do not publish data about individuals
Mobility inputs are anonymised and aggregated before they reach us. Driver demographics are area-level inferences about where trips begin — not observations about the people making them.
We do not certify anything
Our numbers support planning, screening and prioritisation. Where a permitting authority requires a certified traffic study, ours is not a substitute.
We do not accept payment to change a figure
No client, advertiser or partner influences a published number. Corrections are made when the data is wrong, and logged on the methodology page.
